Data Sheet: SIS-N900/180 Isolator

Systems and seismic-resistant devices applied to construction, such as the elastomer seismic isolators, friction pendulum isolators, energy dissipating devices, and sliding insulators for non-structural elements.

Our product catalogue includes insulators for different types of structures; friction energy dissipators, and viscous dissipators.

Our goal is to help constructions overcome quakes without the danger of collapse and without the costly investment that post-seism reparations imply.

Cost-effective system

The isolation system is an investment that REDUCES the cost in structural elements, since the structure

has to deal with a residual design seism of 10% of the original. Therefore, the savings generated from the structural elements are for the isolation system and, hence, it pays for itself.

Isolator description

The SIS-N900/180 isolator is perfect for house-type buildings of 1,2,3 and 4 levels, since its damping and displacement create a reduction in the seismic demand of the structure, without needing an important investment in the isolation system, providing a longer useful life to the construction and a better behavior against seismic stresses. The isolator is ready for its immediate installation and has connecting bolts that facilitate its union to the superstructure.

This device consists of an elastomer1 reinforced with vulcanized steel, it is designed to bear the weight of the structure and provide elasticity beyond the yield point. The layers of elastomer get to isolate and re-center the support during the seism and the energy of the movement is dissipated in the form of heat.

1 Elastomer: the types of compounds that include non-metals in their composition and that show an elastic behavior.

Simbology:

V. = isolator vertical load with seismic activity

F.zd = maximum vertical load in ULS

K.y = horizontal equivalent stiffness

K.v = vertical stiffness

D. gr am = elastomer diameter

ty = rubber thickness

h = height excluded the anchor plates

H = total height included the anchor plates

Z = anchor plate lateral

W = insulator weight without support

Operating principle

The high-performance seismic isolator works under the principle of basal seismic isolation and limits the transfer of energy of the ground to the structure in case of an earthquake or smaller vibrations.

The seismic isolation principle is to decouple the structure the movements of the land provoked by the earthquakes that may damage the supporting structure.

This is possible by using a series of anti-seismic devices called insulators, which are placed strategically over the foundations of the structure, allowing to respond adequately during an earthquake.

The seismic isolation mainly increases the period of the structure (from T1 goes to T2), ensuring that, in the response spectrum of the seism, a lower acceleration is reached (A2 < A1) and thus a lower seismic force (F2 < F1).

The seismic isolators provide enough flexibility to the structure to guarantee that its natural period differs from the natural earthquake period as far as possible. This prevents the appearance of the resonance phenomenon, that amplifies the seismic forces and as a consequence it may cause severe damages and even the collapse of the structure.

The seismic isolators are placed in the foundation of the structure, being this location the typical for a house. Regarding bigger structures, the isolators are usually placed at the medium height of the columns of the first floor or in the capitals of said floor.

The seismic-protection system through seismic isolators must have the following functions:

01.

Optimal performance under service loads, vertical loads, and horizontal loads, being as efficient as a conventional structural support.

02.

Provide enough horizontal flexibility to reach the desired natural period for the isolated structure.

03.

Re-centering capacity during the seismic phenomenon so that any residual displacement may alter the service capacity of the structure.

04.

Provide optimal levels of energy dissipation to control the displacements that may damage other structural elements.

General Considerations of Isolated Systems

To ensure that the isolated system works properly, some construction requirements must be fulfilled.

It is necessary to leave a separation between the adjacent land and the construction because isolators will cause that the superstructure moves parallel to the ground plan level.
